Berberis Harlequin \nCommonly known as Japanese Barbary. \nA compact, deciduous, spiney shrub with arching branches and typically reaches only 4-5ft. in height. \nBerberis Harlequin leaves are dark purple, mottled pink and cream and turn a dazzling shade of red in autumn. \nFragrant yellow flowers tinged with red are carried in late spring and early summer and are followed by dark red berries in autumn. \nMakes an outstanding ornamental hedge, Harlequin is an excellent choice for a low maintenance or informal garden. \nCan also be grown by itself as a specimen plant . \nLeaf variegation can be improved by pruning in autumn or early winter. \nFully hardy, Berberis Harlequin will grow and thrive on even poor soil but performs best on a moist, fertile, well drained site. \nWill tolerate partial shade but best leaf and flower colour are achieved in full sun. \nAll pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom and may not necessarily reflect plants at all times of the year. \nOur Barbary plants are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions \nFor tips on how to maintain this plant visit The Garden Tutor for a \nPACK 1 PLANT \nIMMEDIATE \n \nSee our other Shrubs here \nPlease remember plant maintenance within our nursery is absolutely essential and means we need to prune back some items at certain times of the year to help maintain shape and encourage new growth. \nWe ask all our buyers to remember Berberis plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website.
