Begonia 'Firefly' Ø8cm

Begonia 'Firefly' is a collector's rhizomatous begonia, with small leaves in tones of copper, brick-red and warm pink, veined with dark lines and dusted with a metallic silver sheen. The wine-red underside lights the plant up when backlit, and when mature it lifts clusters of pale-pink flowers above the foliage. An elegant challenge, easy to please with bright indirect light and humid air. Care instructions The good news is that, once you understand where it comes from, 'Firefly' becomes a surprisingly generous plant. It grows in width, filling the pot with new leaves from the tip of the rhizome, and in a single season a young plant like ours can visibly fill out. The secret to a dense, healthy specimen is balance: enough light to keep its colours, enough moisture so the tender leaves do not dry out, but never too much water at the root. Nothing it asks for is complicated - it is simply a plant that responds to attention. Here is everything you need to know, gathered in one place: Light: bright but indirect light. An east- or west-facing window filtered through a sheer curtain is perfect. The warm colours and silver sheen develop best in good light; keep it, however, from direct midday rays, which scorch the tender leaves and bleach the copper. Too little light dulls the colours and stretches the petioles. Temperature: it is happiest between 18 and 24 °C, which is exactly the comfort of a home. It favours steady temperatures; avoid cold draughts from a door or window in winter and proximity to a radiator, which dries the air. It flowers most beautifully in rooms sheltered from sudden swings. Watering: water when the top 2-3 cm of substrate has dried out, then water carefully along the edge of the pot, avoiding the rhizome and the centre of the plant, and let the excess drain away completely. It does not tolerate 'wet feet': excess water leads to rhizome rot. In winter, water less often. Humidity: it loves humid air, around 50-60% or more. Group it with other plants, set it on a tray of pebbles and water, or use a humidifier in dry rooms. Avoid direct misting of the leaves, which can encourage spotting and mildew. Substrate: a loose, airy, well-drained mix - for example indoor potting soil blended with perlite and a little bark or coco fibre. A wide, shallow pot with drainage holes suits it best, because the rhizome grows at the surface. Feeding: in the growing season, from spring to autumn, feed every 2-4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Stop feeding in winter. Propagation: very easy from leaf or rhizome cuttings. Cut a healthy leaf with its petiole or a rhizome segment with a few roots, lay it on moist substrate, keep it warm and bright under a clear cover, and within a few weeks you will have a new plant - the simplest way to fill your window or to pass a specimen on. If small problems appear, do not be discouraged - they are signals easy to read, not obstacles. Powdery, whitish patches appear when the air sits too humid and still around the leaves; airing the room a little and giving up direct misting makes them disappear. Dry, scorched margins call for more moisture in the air or less direct light. Fading colours tell you the plant is reaching for more light, while a soft, translucent rhizome is the classic sign of overwatering - let the substrate dry and cut back the water. All these adjustments are minor, and the plant responds to them quickly.
