Care instructions The good news is that this is one of the most forgiving of houseplants - an ideal companion for discreetly lit corners and busy lives. It grows slowly but steadily and asks surprisingly little. Here is everything you need to know, gathered in one place: Light: it prefers indirect light, medium to strong, which intensifies the magenta of the margins. It also tolerates shadier corners, where, however, the edge colour fades and growth slows. Keep it from direct summer sun, which scorches the thin leaves. Temperature: it is happiest between 18 and 25 °C. It favours the steady temperatures of a home; keep it from cold draughts and do not let it fall below 12 °C in winter. Watering: let the top half of the substrate dry out completely between waterings, then water moderately and drain the excess well. It is safer to underwater than to overwater - standing water rots the roots. Brown tips often come from excess water or from chlorine and fluoride; use water left to reach room temperature, or rainwater. Humidity: it copes well with normal household humidity but appreciates the occasional misting, especially in winter, when the air near radiators becomes very dry. Substrate: a light, very well-drained mix - indoor potting soil blended with perlite or coarse sand. A pot with drainage holes is essential. Feeding: from spring to autumn, feed every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Stop feeding in winter. Propagation and pruning: very easy from stem cuttings. Shorten the stem to the desired height; the cut end sends out new crowns, and the detached piece, placed in water or moist substrate, roots within a few weeks. If small signals appear, they are easy to read. Brown, dry tips call for cleaner and less water; a few yellowing leaves at the base are natural - the plant is simply baring its trunk; pale, spaced-out leaves tell you the plant is reaching for more light. All these adjustments are minor, and the plant responds to them without drama.
